The extension aims to provide ongoing support to employers and their teams because the lockdown is only being eased gradually, rather than all restrictions lifted at the same time.
The scheme will now be available until the end of October, with a few key changes:
Part-time return to work – to help support the transition back to work, employers will be able to bring furloughed employees back part-time. The number of hours permitted is still to be confirmed.
Employers to share the cost – from August, employers will be asked to share the cost of their furloughed employees. Full details will be provided later in May.
Reporting may be required – employers may need to report the cost of furloughed salaries to HMRC – details to be confirmed.
