When I grow up I want to work in HR….

HR magazine circulated an interesting newsletter article this week, prompting readers to think about the types of individuals that would choose a career in the world of Human Resources.

The National Careers Service describes HR as ideally suited to someone who “likes working in an office” which, as HR magazine pointed out, is unlikely to inspire business professionals who want to make a real impact in their job.

This perhaps emphasises the need, now more so than ever, for champions of the profession to be highlighted. Of course there are administrative elements to HR, just like there are in many career paths. However the profile of HR is ever changing, and with this comes an opportunity for professionals to ‘make their mark’ and flourish in a demanding yet rewarding job role.

As we look forward to the HR software show at London Olympia next week, we also prepare to hear from many leading lights in the field – people who will share their experiences and ideas for innovation, and people that also want to encourage further industry change. One such HR pioneer who has certainly proven that a career in Human Resources can be challenging, satisfying and capable of delivering strategic organisational benefits, is Cascade client Sarah Lowe.

HR Manager at Sika Limited, Sarah is set to deliver an expert showcase at HRSS, illustrating how she supported a 472-strong workforce through a £30m company takeover. Sarah’s complex change management journey is also made all the more interesting because, in 2007, she had no Human Resources experience whatsoever. In her presentation on Wednesday 19th June at 11:30, delegates will therefore hear how someone with the right level of foresight, determination, communication skills and flexibility, can really excel in a career in HR.

Sarah’s busy role and commitment to supporting staff as the company continues to evolve, means she rarely sits still. To describe her position as simply suited to someone who “likes working in an office” would certainly not depict what the job truly entails….
